Starting immediately, the Garden City Police Department will be making applications available to enroll in the Department’s Student Police Academy. Applications will be available from the School Resource Officers at Garden City High School, Horace Good and Kenneth Henderson Middle Schools as well as the Garden City Police Department.
This Academy is designed to acquaint students with the Police Department and the criminal Justice system. The Academy provides students with an opportunity to positively interact with police officers so that they will better understand the role of the police in keeping their community safe as well as their own role in the community. The Academy can also be an excellent resource for students considering a career in law enforcement.
The class will meet every Saturday morning for seven weeks from 9:00 a.m. until noon. It will conclude with a small graduation for the students that complete the class. Each class features different topics presented by officers of the Police Department. Some of the topics include: Vehicle stops, DUI, crime scene and underage drinking.
The Academy is open to high school students and middle school students in grades 7-12 who reside in Finney County or attend the Garden City and Holcomb schools.
The Academy will be held at the Garden City Police Department starting October 4, 2013. Class size is limited to a total of 50 students. The deadline to apply is September 26, 2013.
Questions regarding the Academy may be directed to any School Resource Officer or by calling the Police Department at 276-1300.
